Then some version of: “I know a guy who does that” or “we could give it a try” or just “that’s not really our thing.” It happens constantly in the Toronto renovation market, and there’s a very specific reason why.
It’s a Completely Different Skill Set
General contracting, painting, and even drywall finishing are related to venetian plaster the way cooking at home is related to being a pastry chef. There’s some overlap in basic concepts, but the precision, technique, and muscle memory required are in a different category entirely.
Venetian plaster application involves reading the material as it dries, knowing when to apply the next coat based on feel rather than a timer, adjusting trowel pressure across a surface to create consistent movement, and managing transitions around corners, outlets, and architectural details without visible seams. These skills develop over years of focused practice, not weekends of experimentation.
The Materials Are Unforgiving
Premium venetian plaster is a lime-based product that behaves nothing like paint or conventional drywall compound. It has a limited working time — once it starts to set, you can’t go back and smooth it out the way you would with joint compound. If your technique isn’t confident and consistent, every hesitation and correction shows in the finished surface.
The material also interacts with environmental conditions in real time. Temperature, humidity, and airflow all affect drying speed and the final appearance. First, look at volume. A specialist should be able to show you dozens of completed projects, not two or three. Ask about different finishes — can they do a marble-look stucco veneziano, a matte grassello, a metallic burnished surface? Versatility indicates depth of skill.
Second, ask about products. Someone using authentic Italian lime-based plasters from established manufacturers is operating at a different level than someone buying acrylic “venetian plaster” from a big-box store. The materials matter enormously — they determine how the finish looks, feels, performs, and ages.
Third, visit a completed project if possible. Photos can be flattering. Standing in front of a venetian plaster wall and seeing how it handles light, transitions, and details tells you everything you need to know about the applicator’s skill level.
The Good News
The fact that venetian plaster requires specialized expertise is actually part of what makes it valuable. In a world of mass-produced finishes and DIY tutorials, having something in your home that required genuine craftsmanship to create sets it apart. It’s not something every house on the block has, and it can’t be replicated by someone with a YouTube video and a trip to the hardware store.
Your general contractor is great at what they do. Venetian plaster just isn’t what they do — and there’s no shame in that. It’s a different trade, and it deserves a dedicated specialist.
