VENETIAN PLASTER TORONTO
A centuries-old technique reimagined for modern interiors. Venetian plaster transforms walls and ceilings into luminous, stone-like surfaces with a depth and movement that paint can never achieve — hand-applied in multiple layers using lime, marble dust, and natural pigments.
WHAT IS VENETIAN PLASTER
Venetian plaster — known in Italian as stucco veneziano — is a decorative wall finish made from slaked lime and crushed marble. Originating in Venice and perfected during the Renaissance, it was developed as a way to replicate the look of polished natural stone on interior surfaces.
The technique involves applying thin layers of plaster by hand with a steel trowel, each layer adding translucency, colour variation, and dimension. As the layers are burnished and compressed, the marble particles create a natural sheen — from a soft satin glow to a deep, mirror-like polish.
Unlike paint, Venetian plaster becomes part of the wall itself. It’s breathable, naturally antimicrobial, and extraordinarily durable — surfaces applied centuries ago in Italian palazzos still look beautiful today.
OUR VENETIAN PLASTER SERVICES
We offer a full range of Venetian plaster finishes, each tailored to your space, your light, and your aesthetic. Our work includes:
Marmorino — The classic Venetian plaster. Fine marble grain with a smooth, polished surface that mimics natural stone. Available from matte to high-gloss.
Grassello di Calce — An ultra-smooth, aged lime putty finish with exceptional depth. Produces a soft, luminous glow that shifts with the light throughout the day.
Stucco Veneziano — A rich, highly polished finish with veining and tonal variation that closely resembles polished marble. The most dramatic of our plaster options.
Textured Plaster — Coarser aggregate for a more rustic, tactile surface. Ideal for creating old-world warmth in both modern and traditional interiors.
Custom Finishes — Metallic accents, colour blending, multi-tone effects, and bespoke textures developed to your specification.
EFFECTS & FINISHES
Venetian plaster is remarkably versatile. Depending on the technique, layering, and burnishing, we can achieve a wide range of effects:
Polished marble — High-gloss, reflective, with deep veining and tonal movement.
Satin stone — Soft sheen, smooth to the touch, with subtle colour variation.
Matte velvet — Flat, chalky, with a rich tactile quality. Absorbs light rather than reflecting it.
Metallic — Infused with mica or metallic pigments for a warm, shimmering surface. Especially striking in candlelight and evening settings.
Aged / distressed — Layered patina effects that evoke centuries of history. Warm, weathered, and deeply textured.
WHERE TO USE VENETIAN PLASTER
Venetian plaster works beautifully on walls, ceilings, columns, archways, and fireplace surrounds. It can be applied to drywall, concrete, brick, and most prepared surfaces.
In residential spaces, it’s especially impactful in living rooms, dining rooms, primary bedrooms, entryways, and powder rooms — anywhere you want a surface that commands attention without overwhelming the room.
For commercial projects, Venetian plaster elevates hotel lobbies, restaurant interiors, retail flagships, spa environments, and corporate reception areas. When sealed properly, it performs well in high-traffic areas and is easy to maintain.
WHY CHOOSE VENETIAN PLASTER
Depth and dimension — Multiple translucent layers create a surface that changes with the light. No two walls look exactly the same.
Natural and sustainable — Made from lime and marble, not synthetic resins. Venetian plaster is VOC-free, breathable, and naturally resistant to mould and mildew.
Extraordinary durability — A properly applied and sealed Venetian plaster surface will last decades. It’s harder than standard plaster and far more resilient than paint.
Timeless aesthetic — This isn’t a trend. Venetian plaster has been the hallmark of fine architecture since the Roman era. It looks as relevant in a contemporary loft as it does in a heritage home.
OUR EXPERTISE
Venetian plaster is not a DIY material. It demands skilled hands, trained technique, and an understanding of how lime behaves across different surfaces and conditions. Our artisans bring years of specialized experience to every project.
We work with premium Italian plasters sourced from manufacturers who have been refining their formulations for generations. Combined with our hand-application techniques and custom colour development, the result is a surface that’s authentically crafted — not a manufactured imitation.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Consultation — We visit your space, discuss your vision, and recommend the right plaster type and finish. We bring samples so you can see and feel the options in person.
Colour development — We create custom sample boards in your chosen colours, applied with the actual plaster and technique so you see a true representation of the finished surface.
Surface preparation — Walls are cleaned, primed, and prepared to ensure perfect adhesion. We protect all surrounding surfaces, floors, and furnishings.
Application — Multiple thin layers are applied by hand with a steel trowel, each one dried, sanded where needed, and built upon. The layering process creates the depth and translucency that defines authentic Venetian plaster.
Burnishing & sealing — The final layer is burnished to your desired sheen and sealed with a protective wax or natural sealant. We provide care instructions so your walls stay pristine.
