What is Microcement?

Microcement is a versatile, cement-based coating that can be applied to almost any surface, creating a seamless, durable finish. It is just a few millimeters thick, making it a lightweight and flexible option for transforming walls, floors, countertops, and more.

Microcement’s smooth, grout-free appearance makes it a favorite for modern interiors, while its strength and water resistance ensure it performs well in high-traffic or wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens.

Behind the scenes

On this bathroom renovation, an off-white custom colour was created with a minimal textured finish to serve as a timeless, subtle backdrop for the shower and other finishes in the space.

For this project, we completely demolished and rebuilt the drywall, subfloor, shower base, and applied an industrial-style microcement design.

Where Toronto Homeowners Use Microcement

Bathrooms & Showers

Seamless shower surrounds eliminate grout lines entirely—no more re-caulking, no more mould in the corners. When properly sealed with a two-part polyurethane topcoat, microcement is rated for continuous wet exposure and is the go-to choice for wet-rooms and walk-in showers across downtown Toronto condos and detached homes in North York.

Kitchen Backsplashes & Countertops

A 3–4 mm microcement layer turns a dated ceramic backsplash into a modern concrete-look surface in a single weekend install. Heat-resistant up to 120°C and hygienically non-porous when sealed.

Feature Walls

Interior designers in Yorkville and Rosedale increasingly spec microcement for statement walls behind beds, TVs, and fireplaces—the monolithic look pairs beautifully with white oak millwork and brass accents.

Floors

For open-concept main floors where tile transitions look busy, microcement offers a continuous surface with in-floor heating compatibility. Finish options range from polished (for dining rooms) to textured anti-slip (for entryways and kitchens).

Fireplace Surrounds & Range Hoods

Rated for indirect heat, microcement gives a clean architectural box effect around fireplaces and range hoods at a fraction of the cost of solid stone.

Microcement vs. Tile: Which Is Right for Your Toronto Project?

The most common question we get from Toronto clients renovating a bathroom or kitchen is whether to go microcement or ceramic/porcelain tile.

Choose microcement if you want: a seamless monolithic look, no grout lines to clean, a faster install over existing tile (no demo), European design aesthetic, or a continuous surface that flows from wall to floor.

Stick with tile if you want: the widest range of pattern and colour options, easy repair of individual pieces if something cracks, or the lowest upfront cost on a basic builder-grade renovation.

Microcement FAQ — Toronto

How long does a microcement install take?

A typical powder room is 3–4 working days. A full bathroom is 5–7 days. Feature walls are 2–3 days. We can only move to the next coat once the previous one is fully cured, so rushing it compromises the finish.

Is microcement waterproof?

Yes, when installed with the correct substrate prep and sealed with a two-part polyurethane topcoat, microcement is fully waterproof and suitable for showers, wet rooms, and exterior walls under cover.

Can microcement go over existing tile?

Yes. This is one of its biggest advantages for Toronto renovators—no demo, no dust, no lost days. We prime the existing tile, apply a fibre-reinforced base coat to fill grout lines, then build up the microcement layers.

Will it crack?

Properly installed microcement with a fibre mesh base coat is crack-resistant. We’ve had installs in Toronto homes for 6+ years with no cracking. Hairline movement cracks are almost always substrate-related, which is why our prep phase is more thorough than most.

Is it cold underfoot?

Microcement plays extremely well with electric in-floor heating—it conducts heat evenly and warms up faster than stone or porcelain.

How do I clean it?

Warm water and pH-neutral soap. Avoid bleach, ammonia, and abrasive scrubs. We re-seal every 5–7 years to maintain the topcoat.
